I have some big news to share! After three years running my own law firm, I’ve accepted an in-house position as Public Records Counsel at the Energy and Policy Institute, a pro-clean energy nonprofit watchdog.
Owning Ramsingh Legal has been the most challenging and rewarding professional experience of my life. I built the firm from the ground up, expanding to include two more attorneys and office staff. Along the way, we had the privilege of advocating for transparency, accountability, and open government on behalf of clients who cared deeply about the public’s right to know.
Here are some of the many victories from that venture and the many clients we served during that time:
- Won a "first of its kind" ruling in a public records case brought against a private police foundation, obtaining hundreds of unredacted records from the Atlanta Police Foundation relating to the construction of “Cop City”
- Obtained access to 911 audio call recordings from the attempted presidential candidate assassination in Butler, Pennsylvania, on behalf of NBC Universal, Scripps Media, and the Intercept
- Obtained a full attorney’s fees and costs award from a school district in Pennsylvania after a court found that the district intentionally tampered with library database reports to hide the removal of books from the school library
- Successfully prevented a school district in Pennsylvania from imposing a photo id requirement as a prerequisite to attending public meetings
- Helped Court TV Live cover murder trials by successfully arguing in favor of their right to film in Georgia’s courtrooms
- Obtained near-maximum civil penalties and full attorney’s fees and costs in a case exposing Georgia city officials who permitted a private contractor into an executive session for the purpose of deliberating on a contract renewal
While I’m immensely proud of what we achieved in a rapid timeframe, I'm very excited about this new opportunity, which will allow me to bring my public records expertise to a broader national platform.
Although the firm officially closes at the end of August 2025, Ramsingh Legal’s webpage will remain up and active so that we can continue to help inquiring citizens and journalists find alternative high quality local counsel in public records matters.
To my clients, colleagues, and friends who supported Ramsingh Legal, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your trust, referrals, and encouragement made this journey possible.
To any entrepreneurially minded attorney wondering whether they can start their own firm and make a success of it, I’m more than happy to share what I learned during the process.
Keep fighting the good fight!
In gratitude,
Joy Ramsingh
